Hebrews 1:1-3
Hebrews is an exhortation for Christians not to lose faith. Why are the recipients in this danger? Because the sights, sounds and tastes of religious life in 1st century Jerusalem feel so much more real than the words of Jesus that they’re holding onto. As a result, they are in danger of wandering back to the ways of the Old Testament. But they mustn’t, for that was only a partial revelation of God: the full truth comes with Christ. So they need to catch a fresh glimpse of him in all his grandeur, for Jesus is God Himself come to us: the eternal Son who makes the Father known. Jesus is the source of all true life. To know God we must know Jesus.
