Hebrews 6:19-7:4
Melchizedek was the priest-king of Salem (later Jerusalem) when Abraham was wandering the land. He came out to bless Abraham after a military victory, and Abraham recognised in him one who had what he wanted: righteousness and peace in the land. So though Abraham already had the promised blessing of God, he was happy to receive Melchizedek’s blessing and give him honour through financial tithing. Why is this important? Because, says Hebrews, Melchizedek was a picture of the type of priest-king God would one day give to the world. God spoke of this in Psalm 110 and it was partially lived out by King David. By Jesus is the complete fulfilment of what was seen in Melchizedek. Jesus is the king of righteousness and peace for his people.
