Hebrews 7:11-19
Hebrews continues to emphasise the need for a finer priest if we are to know God. God’s law, and the priests appointed under it, were a blessing to Israel. But they were weak, unable to save people from the sin in our hearts. But a better priest was promised, not from the tribe of Levi, who would be righteous before God and able to bring peace. Jesus fulfils that promise. He is the eternal priest who can bring us to God. He is the giver of hope which cannot fail. So there is much to learn from what God commanded Israel to do, but we don’t try to recreate Israel’s life. Christians have been given something much better through our Lord and his kingdom.
