Hebrews 9:15-22
Blood is a sign of life to us: if it’s seeping out from our skin, we know there’s a problem! The writer powerfully uses this image in discussing how Israel’s covenant was covered in blood to make clear that to deal with our sin and the death it deserves, there has to be sacrifice: only the death of another can bring us life. Supremely, in the new covenant, that’s Jesus. He is the Son of God who became a man. His life was pure and holy. But he shed his blood to wash away our sin. The need for this was clear from how the old covenant came to Israel with many animal sacrifices. But Jesus’s singular self-sacrifice is enough to save all his people for all eternity. His death is the payment for our eternal inheritance, which God – Father, Son and Spirit – was willing to make out of love for us. His death is our hope.
