Acts 15:1-19
This is the first sermon in a series on the book of James. But we begin with James’s approach to an early-Church split recorded in Acts. Some Jewish believers disapprove of Gentile believers because they haven’t taken on the ways of Judaism, especially circumcision. But when Peter, Paul and Barnabas show that God has accepted the non-Jews through faith in Jesus, James adds his “amen” by pointing to Amos. That ancient prophet spoke of a day when people of all kinds would truly worship God through his king, just as happened in David’s time. James sees Amos’ prophecy is coming beautifully true in Jesus. As Christians we know that Jesus has made us fully acceptable in God’s sight.
