James 2:14-20
James’s Christian friends are struggling with hardship and difficulty. In such situations, it’s easy to react in ordinary human ways which, often, lead us down into sin or under the influence of those who do not have a personal relationship with the Lord. So in his letter, James calls his hearers back to living by faith. But it must be transformative faith: not just words of trust, but a life lived for the Lord. That means showing mercy towards others even as the Lord has shown mercy to us. Faith and deeds should not be separated; they go together. Faith without deeds is empty; deeds without faith are empty. True believers exhibit both.
