James 2:21-26
To illustrate his point about the relationship between faith and works, James calls to mind two characters from the Old Testament: Abraham and Rahab. Both lived through painful events where the only hope for their future was to place their faith in the Lord. Both did so and were blessed by God as a result, with forgiveness for sin and salvation from death. James uses these folk as evidence to his Jewish critic that it’s not enough simply to do the works God requires: the motivation which shapes those works is vital to them. The Lord wants our loving trust in Him, and to show that when He tests us.
