Jeremiah 6:23-7:7
Jeremiah has been poetically announcing the coming invasion of Judah and the resulting fall of Jerusalem, at the hands of a terrible army from the north. Why is this happening? Because, like the human race as a whole, the city has become contaminated by sins like lying. The ruin of the city will be devastating since the people think it secure due to God’s “home” being there: the temple. But they are fooled by their superstitious hearts. The people have abused the land and ruined the temple, so God will hand it over to destruction. The longing for home runs deep within us. It points towards how God will one day have a home with His people forever. The temple was a temporary model of that. The reality to be found in all Jesus has done, is doing and will do.
