Jeremiah 7:8-20
Judah, southern Israel, feels secure in Jeremiah’s day. The north may been invaded and exiled, but Judah is safe. Why? It has the temple! But Jeremiah says it’s foolish to believe that. Objects don’t ensure God’s help. He can leave the temple just as He left its predecessor, the tent at Shiloh. And, indeed, He will do for the people break His commands (including offering family worship to false gods!) and then run to the temple like it’s a criminal safe-house. This is so horrible, God tells Jeremiah not to pray for a change of His mind. In his day, Jesus found the temple to be the same and predicted its collapse. However, Jesus is building a finer temple which will never fall and where people will truly know the Lord. It’s his church.
