Jeremiah 7:21-34
God is going to send Judah into exile under a foreign empire. Why would he cause such suffering? It’s because the people will not listen to him and that is exemplified in their sacrifices. They offer lots of dead animals to God, but without any real concern to obey Him. Those sacrifices were given to testify to their need of God’s mercy for their sin, but they don’t hear the lesson and sit loose to their sin. Indeed, they even make their guilt far worse with the grotesque practice of child sacrifice. We need our ears open to God. We need our hearts open to admitting our sin. And we need the most valuable sacrifice in the world to save us for what we’ve become: that of the Lord Jesus upon the cross.
