Jeremiah 8:16-9:11
When in a terrible situation we long to find comfort from our trials. Here God warns the people of Judah that they will not because their wickedness. Why should people who sacrifice their children find comfort for themselves? So the people will fear coming attacks whilst sensing that the Lord will not be intervening to save them: there will be no balm to heal them. Jeremiah feels the pain of this disaster intensely. But the Lord is clear: sin is rife – deceit and idolatry – so judgement must come. Such lostness in a society is terrifying. But there is comfort for those who would seek it: Jesus. He can heal from sin and its consequences, where no-one else can.
