Jeremiah 11:9-23
Judah has betrayed her Lord. She may once have thrown out the idols she worshipped but now they’re all back with more besides. Does she imagine the Lord won’t notice? It’s folly to think so. The Lord does notice and, through Jeremiah, says he will no longer hear their cries for mercy – the end is nigh. However, Jeremiah then finds that it’s even more personal than that. His own hometown has been plotting his murder because they don’t want to hear his prophecies. Such betrayal causes him to cry out for God to bring justice. In his time, Jesus too knew betrayal like this. However, he never reacted with personal anger to it, though he did warn of God’s justice. He remained loving and merciful, entrusting himself to his father. We must learn from him how to behave when betrayed.
