Jeremiah 12:1-17
It is sometimes said that God cannot be both all-good and all-powerful because if He was there would be no evil. So either He’s in favour of evil, or He can’t do anything about it. This passage shows Jeremiah wrestling with a version of that dilemma: he knows God is righteous yet is distressed by the plots of the wicked and the ruin they’re causing. God replies by telling him that things are going to get ever worse – God’s ways are not our ways! Yet, no-one should assume God does not care. He hates evil. He will punish it. But he’s willing to be patient with sinners that some might find forgiveness and life. And that was proven wonderfully when the Son of God came into our world as a man to die for His people from all over the world. Jeremiah hears a little of this plan in God’s words to him.
