Mark 7:9-19
Jesus’ kingdom is formed from the rebirth of Israel. But some cling to the wreckage of broken, ancient Israel and so rage against him. But these men are seriously misled by their own minds. They consider themselves careful law-keepers but the reality is they are law-breakers, as Jesus easily demonstrates with a simple example. Then he goes on to explain to the whole crowd the truth about God’s law which they’ve missed. It was given because of the wretched state of the human heart. So what they need truly to please God is not lots of extra rules like the Pharisees, but a new inner life. Indeed, we all need that. And Jesus can provide it.
